Awards Galore for Budding Designers

A group of Taylor’s College, School of Architecture, Building and Design (SABD) students proved their talents and passion for design by winning 13 awards in three recent Inter-College architecture and design competitions.

20th Architecture Student Workshop 2008

At the Architecture Student Workshop 2008 in Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, Taylor’s Diploma in Architectural Technology students took home four awards. Final-year student Lim Li Yin won two of them – the Best Female Participant and second place in Fashion Design.

She received the first award for being an outstanding group leader and active participant in all the different games and activities. For the fashion design challenge, Li Yin teamed up with course mate Fong Yen Jin. Despite not having any formal training in fashion design, the duo impressed with their male and female futuristic-themed outfits made from recycled items like bubble wrap, tin foil and plastic bags. They proudly modelled their creations at the catwalk show on the first night of the workshop.

“We spent about two weeks designing and making the clothes. We got ideas and assistance from friends, including one who was a fashion designer. It was a lot of fun! said Li Yin.

“We were both excited to take part because we love fashion and have been influenced by reality TV shows like Project Runway and America’s Next Top Model,” added Yen Jin.

Over 20 teams from various public and private colleges and universities participated in the five-day workshop themed TranXXit. The design competition was focused on the theme of Transformation, Transition and the main objective was to challenge students to design not only for the future, but to incorporate elements of natural resources and Mother Nature into their designs.

PAM (Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia) Architecture Students Works Exhibition 2008

It was all cheers for the SABD team at the PAM exhibition in 1Utama Shopping Centre when the group comprising of five final-year Diploma in Architectural Technology students - Eu Ric, Annunziata Nuradzlina Patricia, Lee Mun Chun, Marc Cheeng and Shahira Najia – won first place for Best Booth Design.

Participants of the challenge had to design and build a 2m x 2m booth to display a selection of students’ works. They were allowed to use any materials of their choice. Wanting to stand out, the Taylor’s team created a booth from 100% commercial cardboard boxes. They were inspired by Frank Gehry’s Easy Edges furniture series, which used the versatile cardboard as the main medium.

“Our aim was to create a booth that was very solid and would allow visitors to walk through the booth and experience it from the inside, rather than just walk around it,” Marc explained.

Eu Ric added: “By cutting each piece of cardboard in different sizes and joining them together, we created a structure that looked like a simple cube from the outside, but on the inside, there are many intricate curves.”

Another unique aspect of the booth is its ability to change forms because of its modular design. The cube booth can be flipped inside out or even turned into a high-back chair. The design stage was a breeze, but the production took one month due to the tedious work involved. The students had to painstakingly hand cut individual pieces from the thick cardboard boxes.

“At times, the job became so tiring and routine that we had to keep motivating ourselves to go on. In the end, the time, energy and resources spent on the project were worth it! said Annunziata.

Themed Towards Excellence in Architecture, this year’s exhibition featured a total of 14 booths displaying the finest students’ architectural works from various colleges and universities in Malaysia.

13th MSID (Malaysian Society of Interior Design) Interior Design Students’ Saturday 2008

Working together, 25 Diploma in Interior Design students made waves in competitions held during the two-day event.

Although underdogs who were making their debut in the event, the students bagged seven awards, including four first place finishes in Showtime & Performance, Short Movie, Graphic & Visual Communication – Design Competition and Bunting Design.

The winning short movie was developed and produced in a week. The group created a three-minute video themed Changing Spaces based on the given topic of Expiry Date. Using small hand-made models, the students showed how a space within four walls can constantly change and evolve based on what goes into and out of the particular space, such as adornments and furnishings.

“We worked well together to come up with the concept and ideas for this video. Our goal was to show the dynamism of a space,” said Ong Jun Hao. “We were proud of our work and it’s great that it was judged as the best piece.”

For the Graphic & Visual Communication – Design Competition, participants had to create a visual piece that showed the future. The Taylor’s five-member team created a large photo montage using the KL skyline as a backdrop. To show how life in the future (from 2040 to 2105) in KL changed in terms of people’s lifestyle, buildings and the environment, the students altered the skyline by adding on different images and sketches.

“We challenged ourselves to be as creative as possible when coming up with ideas about what the future would be like and how we would use design and technology to combat issues, such as pollution and population growth,” explained Tang Li Qun.

His fellow team member Ng Wai Sie added: “I believe our piece stood out because our ideas suited the theme very well and we managed to convey the future in a relevant and tangible way.”

Organised by MSID and hosted by the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in Gombak, the 2008 Interior Design Students’ Saturday themed Futurama attracted the participation of 15 local public and private universities and colleges.

Mr. Tony Liew, Programme Director of the School of Architecture, Building and Design, commended the students for excelling in all the different competitions.

“Through their active participation, the students were able to challenge themselves and further mould their talents and capabilities. They displayed a high level of creativity and enthusiasm and their ability to win certainly bodes well for the future of the professions.”
