Documentation of knowledge, following the conventions of science, serves two purposes: assessment and recognition of the knowledge contributed by Taylor's to the existing corpus of knowledge. Taylor's has now been accorded University College status and has set its roadmap to achieving University status. Documentation of knowledge has taken on an even more important role in the growth and progress of Taylor's towards university status. How do we go about this arduous task of getting more teaching staff to write? The answer: they must be given an avenue to publish. The setting up of Taylor's Press should serve this function effectively.
As a University College, Taylor's will benchmark against global standards of scientific inquiry, writing, and publishing in order for its researchers to be assessed, cited and recognised. Taylor's Press will aim towards increasing the number of published titles and quality research papers by the academics.
Form and Function
Taylor's Press is managed by a Publications Steering Committee chaired by the Vice Chancellor. Other members include the Head of the Centre for Research and Development who has his hand on the pulse of the research carried out at Taylor's, Chief Editors of existing journals, the Chairman of Research/Scholarly and Development Committee and other individuals whom in the view of the Vice-Chancellor can contribute effectively towards the publishing programme of Taylor's.
The Publications Steering Committee
The functions of the Steering Committee are essentially to set the Editorial Policy, set the house style for the Press, seek funds and set financial policies, monitor progress in publications, suggest recommendations, decide on publication awards etc.
Journal Editorial Boards
Existing journal editorial boards shall continue to function while new editorial boards shall be set up for each new journal initiated. When deciding on members for journal editorial boards, it will be good to keep in mind that members serve to help the chief editor identify reviewers for each manuscript received, cajole reviewers into meeting review deadlines, check if authors have incorporated changes suggested by reviewers and ensure sufficient articles for each issue of the journal.
Taylor's journals will work towards listing in the Science Citation Index (SCI) within a 3-year period. This is achievable if the journals are published according to schedule, have a good peer review system in place, the articles are methodologically sound, written in good English with strong adherence to the house style, and the journal receives a fair number of articles from other countries. |
